Title: No.1240 Chainlink

Year: 2023

Media: Powder coated galvanised steel chainlink

Size: 224 x 135 x 4.5 cm

About the work: In this work, strands of chainlink fence are coloured and woven together to create a delicate textural surface. The beautiful fluidity of this woven material, ubiquitous across our urban landscape, is brought into focus. While the material’s grided surface and layered colour interaction are reminiscent of previous mesh works by Begum, the movement within the woven chainlink creates a disrupted geometry that tends towards a more organic form of expression.

Bio: The work of London-based artist Rana Begum distils spatial and visual experience into ordered form. Through her refined language of Minimalist abstraction, Begum blurs the boundaries between sculpture, painting and architecture. Her visual language draws from the urban landscape as well as geometric patterns from traditional Islamic art and architecture. Light is fundamental to her process. Begum’s works absorb and reflect varied densities of light to produce an experience for the viewer that is both temporal and sensorial. Born in Bangladesh in 1977, Rana Begum lives and works in London. In 1999, Begum graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design and, in 2002, gained an MFA in Painting from Slade School of Fine Art.

Year: 2024

Media: Ink on paper (fingerprints)

Size: 42 x 29.7 cm

About the work: This series was inspired by Begum's experience visiting a registry office in Bangladesh, following the death of her father. In Bangladesh, a fingerprint is used to notarise a document, resulting in the walls of the building being covered in fingerprints. For Begum, these marks created a powerful visual narrative of those who were present, those who were absent, and the relationship between body, architecture and memory.
