About the work: As an internationalist I’m not a great fan of national flags. But when an indigenous people’s expressions of cultural identity are brutally repressed, as they are in Israel / Palestine, the flag transcends mere national allegiance and becomes an international symbol of solidarity, hope and resistance against erasure.
Bio: John Smith was born in east London, where he still lives and works. He is best known for his film and video work, which has been widely shown internationally in galleries and independent cinemas and awarded major prizes at many international film festivals. Selected solo exhibitions include Secession, Vienna (upcoming, 2025); Kunstmuseum Magdeburg (2022); Museum of Contemporary Art, Leipzig (2015); Centre d'Art Contemporain de Noisy-le-Sec, Paris (2014); Kestnergesellschaft, Hanover (2012); Turner Contemporary, Margate (2012); Weserburg Museum for Modern Art, Bremen (2012) and Royal College of Art Galleries, London (2010). John Smith’s work is held in numerous public collections including Tate.
