About the work: I make paintings which consider connection, distance, gesture and touch. I use repeated motifs, most notably the hand, to explore the way we communicate with our bodies as much as we communicate with words. While paint will always fix an image in a moment, I am particularly drawn to transitory moments - a window letting the light in in the morning, a shirt half open, two hands on the cusp of meeting

Bio: Ellie MacGarry was born in Cambridge, UK in 1991 and now lives and works in London, UK. She has a BA in Fine Art from the University of Leeds and an MFA in Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art for which she received a Felix Slade scholarship and the Melville Nettleship Prize.
