About the work: This is a film still from IL Y AURA (There will be). Originally shot on Super 16mm film, staring Thibault de Montalembert and the artist herself. The film is inspired by Eugène Ionesco’s absurdist play La Leçon, 1951. In a Parisian apartment, a pupil arrives in a professor’s home for an ambiguous ritualised language lesson. She begins to nervously recite a series of sentences in French all beginning with “il y aura” (there will be) describing various scenes that ‘will be’ in the future. In 2022 IL Y AURA was presented as a major solo exhibition at The South London Gallery and Gaudel de Stampa, Paris.
Bio: b.Leicester, 1985. Lives and works in Birmingham, UK.
She works across a wide range of media including live performance, video, installation, sound, music, text and sculpture. Her work fluctuates between script and improvisation and highlights the unstable relationship between art, communication and representation. She composes the soundtracks for her works and is co-founder of experimental music/performance group Ravioli Me Away who have produced a major touring alt-opera (2019), released four Albums and toured internationally. Theobalds work has been exhibited, screened and performed internationally including; PLAYGROUND festival Museum Leuven, Leuven (2023); Fabriano Contemporeana International Art Biennial, Fabriano (2023); The South London Gallery (2022); Pilar Corrias (2017); Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2019 & 2015); Lisson Gallery, London (2015), Wysing Arts Centre (2019 & 2015) Chisenhale Gallery (2014) amongst others.
