About the work: Stanton Williams’ reinvigoration of the Royal Opera House is a physical manifestation of cultural change at the venue, enlivening the opera house throughout the day to create a welcoming, multifaceted and inclusive cultural and social hub.

Bio: After studying at the Architectural Association in London and at UCLA in California, Alan worked on the Centre Pompidou in Paris before forming the partnership Stanton Williams with Paul Williams in 1985. In 2012 the practice was awarded the RIBA Stirling Prize for the Sainsbury Laboratory in Cambridge. Other notable Stanton Williams projects include the UAL campus at King’s Cross; the Millennium Seedbank at Wakehurst; the ‘Open-Up’ project at the Royal Ballet and Opera House and a new campus building for UCL on their Olympic Park site. Alan was elected a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) in 2005 and a Royal Academician in 2009, before being awarded the OBE for services to architecture in 2014
